Both opponents are former Australian Open runners-up and produced some good shot-making but eventually Baghdatis slipped to a 6-3 2-6 1-6 6-4 7-5 defeat. The Flushing Meadows saw the number 16 seed Baghdatis enjoy a two set to one lead and also led 3-1 in the decider.
Baghdatis went into the tournament riding confidence after an encouraging lead-up to the U.S. Open, winning the title in Washington and reaching the semi-finals in Cincinnati. Baghdatis announced that he didn’t play very good but that it was good to be back in the game of tennis. He also said that he will continue the form he has and finding solutions to win.
Clement will face Argentina’s Eduardo Swhank in the next round of the tournament.
